Creating Your Resume

You may have thought that resumes were for people seeking jobs.  While you are correct, they are also for you, the student athlete.  Be thorough, concise, and honest, when writing your resume.  If you have achieved a level of expertise or excellence, the academic and athletic resume is a great way to communicate with the coaches of your choice.  Make sure that you are continually updating your resume with your latest information...academically and athletically.  Optional resume guideline here.

Freshman and Sophomore

At this stage you should start to compile the information academically and athletically.  Your resume in the first couple of years might not be as in depth as you would like but over time it will grow more and more.  You should also update your tournament list if it has changed.  For example...if your team has a successful tournament add it.  If your team chooses to go to a different event or add an event, add it.  Making the finals or crowned champions of a tournament should also always be included.

Junior and Senior
Your resume here should be an in-depth and detailed version of your individual accomplishments along with team accomplishments.  Your test scores, SAT and ACT, along with your cumulative GPA, should be the most current prior to sending it out.  You should also update your tournament list if it has changed or add to it if you have won or made the finals of a tournament recently.

Video also can be a very helpful tool in the recruitment process.  Most tournaments now offer some kind of video service.  It would not hurt to compile a 5 minute video and post it on YouTube.  This way you can then add the link to your emails to your coaches.  Video is not as important in your Freshman year as it is in your Sophomore, Junior and Senior years.

Remember, college coaches get hundreds of emails a week from perspective student athletes and the coaches schedules are filled with watching players that have contacted them.  So, it is highly unlikely in this day and age, for you to just get discovered.  You have to put the work in, to get where you want to go.  Just the same applies for your game.  The more effort you put into the recruitment process the more looks you will get.
